Research : Applying Goodwin To A Contemporary UK Music Video

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.

(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

The genre of music that i have selected is the urban genre, the music video illustrates the lyrics as it is about a boy who's father dies and he rise to revive him, thats why the lyrics are 'back to me' , this fits with the associations of urban music as the location is in a general dark urban area, however the music video is strange and doesn't go with the general urban video's. Overall i think that this video fits the general criteria for a normal urban music video, however some of the elements during the video do not fit.

2.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.

(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)

The relationship between the music video and the lyrics are illustrative as they illustrate the story that goes along with the song, the song is called back to me and the story is that of a child who want to revive his father after he has been shot.

3.There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.

(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

The pace of the song is generally quite slow however the music video's speed of editing is fast, this contradicts as the music and the songs pace are not the same or similar. there are no lip syncing in this music video, contradicting the general urban music video's

4.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

there are no shots of the artist during this video, this means that thee is no promotion for the artist directly, they used a different music video to get the song noticed so that it promoted him in a different way.

5.There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

There are no shots of any mirrors or any strong sense of any female representation in this music video, they use one female character and she is the character that brings the father back to life, this could be related to a stereotype of woman about giving life?

      6) There are often intersexual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc.).

There was no reference to any other form of media in the sense of video's or TV programmes, this video is completely unique to itself.

  1. Thanks for completing this task James. You need to look at how your posts are formatted as this seems a little strange. I would also like you to get rid of the red background and use plain white please.

I would now like you to answer the following question as a reply to this comment:

From the work you have done so far, and your own personal knowledge of music videos, do you think Andrew Goodwin's theories regarding music videos are out of date or still applicable?

  2. I think that Andrew Goodwins theory on music video's are still applicable today as the only difference between todays music videos are that we have better technology so that we can make the overall product better. However music videos still have this general outlining.

  3. You are right to state that Goodwin can still be applied James. It is interesting to see how some artists are trying to move music videos in a different direction. Take a look at Pharrell's website www.24hoursofhappy.com - is this a music video?
